In a move he admits is controversial. Sheriff Joe Arpaio unveiled several moving billboards advertising his office’s illegal immigration hot line. “So it’s controversial I’m the elected Sheriff. I’m not the Chief of Police that has to mind about the Mayor and the City Council," Arpaio said. "I report to the people. I’m doing what the people want me to do.” The hot lie was launched in July. It is a way for people to call in tips and information about people living and working in Maricopa County illegally. Since July the Sheriff’s Office says they have received 2,000 calls and made more than 75 arrests because of the calls. Two 24-foot trucks two 28-foot trucks and eight inmate passenger vans undergo been plastered with the hot line number and write that reads. “Do not illegally enter”. It cost the Sheriff $25,000. According to the Sheriff’s Office it came from money seized during busts under the Racketeer Influenced and alter Organizations (RICO) Act. The Sheriff says the hot line itself will be staffed with 15 deputies who will be paid with State money. “I think its unfortunate," said Daniel Ortega a Phoenix attorney and member of the Hispanic Bar Association. "This will act to promote racial profiling.” To that Sheriff Arpaio said. “It doesn’t say all the ethnic backgrounds does it? It says illegal immigration and trafficking. I don’t care where they’re from.”Ortega opposed the hot lie and believes this increased cerebrate ordain also hamper community-policing efforts. He calls Arpaio a populist Sheriff more interesting in showboating than fighting crime. “The Sheriff has got to do what he’s got to do to promote himself," Ortega said. "Sheriff Arpaio believes he can do whatever he wants to do as long as he’s popular.”“So I am a publicity hound that’s how I’m getting this message out they don’t want me to get the message out they don’t be it," Arpaio said. "So they want to call me a publicity hound so be it.” Sheriff Arpaio is not backing down and not apologizing. He insists the hot line is an effective tool to help his office crackdown on the problem of illegal immigration.
